#TGIT: Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal & How To Get Away With Murder

Finally, after months of anxiously waiting to see what the creative geniuses over at Shondaland had in store for some of my favorite TV characters, it’s almost time for Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder to return from hiatus. [SPOILERS AHEAD]

I have so many unanswered questions, some of which I’m not really sure I can handle the answers to. But I do know this, I’m going to need a lot of wine to get me through it all…

Any true #TGIT fan knows the importance of a good bottle of wine and a big bowl of popcorn as you settle in to watch all of the juicy drama unfold for the next three hours. For this watch party, I’m serving up a different homemade batch of sangria and fresh popcorn for each of the three shows.

Grey’s Anatomy — White “Sangrita”

  • White Wine
  • 1 Cup Tequila
  • ½ Cup Triple Sec
  • 2 Cups Sprite
  • 1 Cup Orange Juice
  • ½ Cup Lime Juice
  • 1 Orange
  • 2 Lemons
  • 2 Limes
  • Cilantro

  • Cut fruit into slices.
  • Pour wine, tequila, triple sec, Sprite and juices into a pitcher.
  • Add fruit and cilantro. Chill overnight. Serve over ice.

Each of the leading ladies of the #TGIT shows may be known for their ability to kick ass and take names (in true bosslady fashion), but they’re also pretty well-known for their drinking habits. For Meredith Grey, here alcohol of choice just so happens to be tequila. She’s been seen knocking back more than a few tequila shots over the 13 seasons that have aired thus far, starting with the pilot episode where she had a drunken rendezvous with her future husband/love of her life/doctor with the best hair, McDreamy. Hell, sometimes she just drinks the stuff straight from the bottle so it’s safe to say that she’s a fan.

In honor of my favorite tequila drinking, badly dancing, dark and twisty doctor I decided to incorporate the flavors of a margarita into this delicious white wine sangria. To start, you’ll want to slice up a decent amount of bright lemons, limes and oranges to brighten up each glass poured. Add the fruit and cilantro to a pitcher, then top with a bottle of white wine. Next, you’ll want to add in the fresh citrus juice, liquors and soda.

Feel free to add more juice for tartness or soda to sweeten the drink, until your desired flavor is reached. Let the “sangrita” to chill overnight before serving to allow the flavors to blend together. When you’re ready to drink it, pour into an ice-filled glass. Fresh citrus fruit and a cilantro garnish gives the drink a crisp, clean finishing touch.

Grey’s Anatomy — Tequila Shot Popcorn

  • Popcorn
  • 1 Tbsp. Butter
  • ½ Tbps. Salt
  • ½ Tbsp. Lime Juice
  • 1 tsp. Lime Zest

  • Melt the butter, then stir in remaining ingredients.
  • Pour the butter mixture, one spoonful at a time, and quickly toss popcorn to avoid getting it soggy.
  • Optional: Top with additional salt and lime zest.

Did I already mention how much Meredith likes tequila? Well let me just say it again. She reallllly likes tequila…Lime and salt compliment more than just a good tequila shot, my friends. As it turns out, the two flavors make an excellent topper for popcorn as well! This tequila shot flavored popcorn goes perfectly with the White Wine “Sangrita” made previously.

Making fresh-popped popcorn over the stove, rather than warming up a bag in the microwave, is much easier than you might think. Heat 3 kernels in a thin layer of vegetable/canola/coconut oil in a large covered pot until they pop. Remove the lid and take out the popped kernels before covering the bottom with a fresh layer of unpopped kernels. Take the pot off of the heat for 30 seconds, shake, and return to heat. While the kernels continue popping, make sure that you shake the pop frequently to prevent it from burning. Continue cooking until the popping slows, then transfer to a large bowl once completed.

While the popcorn cooks, melt a tablespoon of butter in the microwave. Add lime juice, salt and lime zest to the melted butter. Slowly pour the butter, salt and lime mixture over the popcorn in one spoonful at a time. I highly recommend taking the time to quickly mix the popcorn between each spoonful of butter being added to keep it from getting soggy. For an extra kick, add a little more salt and lime zest to the finished popcorn before serving.

Scandal — Red Wine and Blue Sangria

  • Red Wine
  • 1 Cup Triple Sec
  • 1 Cup Cranberry Juice
  • 2 Cups Sprite
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Apple

  • Use a small star shaped cookie cutter to cut apple slices into stars; Add apple stars, blueberries and raspberries to a pitcher.
  • Pour in the bottle of win, Triple Sec, cranberry juice and sprite.
  • Chill overnight; Serve over ice.

It’s an election year, both on and off the screen, and if that doesn’t make you want to drink then I don’t know what will. Luckily, I’ve got the perfect patriotic sangria to help get us all through it. It’s handled…Sorry, but you know I couldn’t resist. Like most 18-22 year old PR majors, Olivia Pope truly is one of my idols. She’s got that white hat and red wine, yet she never spills a single drop of it. That’s a true gladiator if you ask me.

The recipe for this sangria is pretty classic, but the detailed and decorative fruit makes the drink stand out at any party. What you’ll need: A small star-shaped cookie gutter and some of the biggest red apples you can find. The bigger the apple, the more surface are you’ll have to work with! Cut the apple into slices, then use the cookie cutter to make as many stars as you can.

Add the apple stars, blueberries and raspberries to a pitcher, followed by the cranberry juice, triple sec and soda. Again, you’ll want to chill the sangria overnight so the fruit can soak up all the yummy wine flavors! Serve it over ice and garnish with fresh apple stars or berries.

Scandal — Gladiator Popcorn

  • Popcorn
  • 1 Tbsp. Butter
  • 1 Tbsp. Parmesan Cheese
  • ½ Tbsp. Truffle Salt
  • ½ Tbsp. Parsley

  • Melt the butter; Stir in the truffle salt and half of the Parmesan cheese.
  • Pour the butter mixture, one spoonful at a time, and quickly toss popcorn to avoid getting it soggy.
  • Top popcorn with parsley and extra Parmesan cheese.

Fellow Gladiators, grab your white hats and prepare to get shit done…This popcorn is for you. Originally, I had the idea to make a white cheddar popcorn to play along with the whole “white hat” idea. All of the recipes I came across were so simple and basic though (popcorn + white cheddar powder), so I decided to spice things up a bit.

Follow the same directions described previously to whip up a new batch of popcorn if you need to make more. Once you’re popcorn is ready, add a little bit of parmesan cheese and truffle salt to your melted butter. If you don’t have truffle salt handy, you can always substitute a few drops of truffle oil and a pinch of sea salt. Slowly spoon the butter over the popcorn, but don’t forget to mix frequently to keep it from getting soggy from the butter. As a final garnish, sprinkle additional cheese and parsley over top before serving.

HTGAWM — Rosé From The Dead Sangria

HTGAWM:Sangria - Title.png

  • Rosé
  • 1 Cup Vodka
  • ½ Cup Triple Sec
  • 1 Package Strawberries
  • 2 Lemons
  • ¼ Cup Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. Water
  • 1 Cup Lemon Juice
  • 2 Cups Sprite

  • Cut strawberries; Blend 1 cup of strawberries (set the rest aside), sugar and water until smooth.
  • Combine rosé, strawberry purreé, vodka, Triple Sec, lemon juice and Sprite in a pitcher.
  • Add lemon and strawberry slices.
  • Chill overnight; Serve over ice.

While Meredith Grey is busy dancing it out in between margaritas and Olivia Pope is polishing off her second bottle of wine for the night, Annalise Keating can usually be found crying into a half empty bottle of vodka. Don’t worry girl, we’ve all been there…Thanks vodka. The liquor does add a nice kick to this HTGAWM-themed sangria though! As for the drinks name, that one is in honor of my boy Wes. Pour one out for him while you watch, and keep holding out hope that maybe one day he’ll return from the dead.

This pink rosé sangria definitely packs a nice punch thanks to the vodka, but it’s the sweetness of the strawberries that will keep your guests coming back for more. To make a homemade strawberry purée, add frozen strawberries, sugar and water to a blender. In the meantime, keep yourself busy by slicing up a package of fresh strawberries and a few lemons.

Add the fruit slices to a large pitcher then pour in a bottle of rosé. Pour in the vodka, lemon juice and soda to the wine, then stir in the strawberry purée next. As with the others, this sangria will taste best if you let it chill overnight so I highly recommend prepping for the premiere on Wednesday night! That way you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the show when the time to watch comes.

HTGAWM — Sriracha Popcorn

  • Popcorn
  • 1 Tbsp. Butter
  • ½ Tbsp. Lime Juice
  • ½ Tbsp. Sriracha
  • ½ Tbsp. Chili Powder
  • ½ Tbsp. Salt
  • ½ Tbsp. Lime Zest

  • Melt butter and stir in Sriracha and lime juice
  • Pour the butter mixture, one spoonful at a time, and quickly toss popcorn to avoid getting it soggy.
  • Toss popcorn with the chili powder, salt and lime zest

The fact that a swirl of Sriracha closely resembles a splatter of blood found at one of the many crime scenes that Annalise and her team of law students have covered up over the past few seasons isn’t the only reason for pairing this spicy popcorn with the HTGAWM-inspired drink from earlier. Ok, fine…It is. But, you can easily combat the sweetness of the strawberry rosé sangria with this bold and flavorful Sriracha popcorn. Trust me now and thank me later.

For anyone who has been living under a rock lately, Sriracha is an Asian-style hot chili sauce. It’s basically the greatest condiment ever and can be added to just about anything — Including popcorn. If you’ve run out of popcorn and need to make more, pop up a batch by following the directions outlined above.

When you’re ready, add lime juice and as much Sriracha as you’d like (depending on how spicy you’d like the dish to be) to the melted butter. Slowly spoon the mixture onto the popcorn, stirring quickly and frequently to keep it crisp. Finally, toss the popcorn with salt and lime zest for an added kick of flavor.

Who’s ready for the most emotional rollercoaster of your life? You will laugh. You will cry. You will want to dance it out, cover up some crimes and all around get shit handled — Well, hopefully not that second one but you get the picture. Grab your popcorn and sangria of choice and settle in for the first TGIT of the year! Follow the rules below while you watch new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and HTGAWM.
