Oh sweet summertime…It is both my favorite and least favorite season of the year. Warm weather. Sandy beaches. Salty sea air. What is there not to love?! The summer TV hiatus, that’s what! Luckily with streaming services like Netflix and Hulu in the mix I can still get my TV fix over the summer break, so there is no need to actually go outside and enjoy the nice weather I mentioned earlier. Let’s be honest, who really likes to do that these days anyways?
A few months ago all four glorious seasons of The OC (ok fine, three amazing seasons and one that often left me wishing that I hadn’t wasted my time watching it) were released on Hulu. So how have I been spending my summer? You guessed it! In honor of my recent binge-sesh, I’ve decided to come up with a handful of recipes that will help you channel your inner newpsie while you binge, so grab your best velour track suit and let the marathon begin!
Check out the gallery below for the recipes featured in this post:
First thing’s first, we’ll need to mix up some drinks to get the party started. Tequilla seems to be the drink of choice for many of our favorite characters from The OC, so fresh margaritas seemed like an obvious choice. Combine tequila, lime juice, agave nectar and ice in a blender for a simple and fresh-tasting marg. Kick things up a notch by adding a shot of Triple Sec and serve in a salt rimmed glass.
Please drink responsibly — That means no mixing pills with tequila, no matter how bad the Cooper side of you wants to. We don’t want anybody overdosing in Tijuana or drowning in the pool after almost being poisoned by your soon-to-be ex wife.
If you’re more of a Kirsten than a Julie, then you will definitely enjoy this next cocktail. We all know that Mrs. Cohen likes her Chardonnay (a little too much), and I can’t say I blame her after having a few of these frosty drinks. Frozen peaches and sweet white wine pair together perfectly, but if red wine is more your style you can create an equally delicious slushy with a sweet red blend and mixed berries.
After you’ve whipped up a batch of margaritas, clean out the blender and get ready for round 2. Combine your wine and fruit of choice in the blender and puree until smooth. Serve in a sugar-rimmed glass and keep your fingers crossed that you don’t wind up befriending a con artist in rehab after you’ve had a few two many of these.
Everything Bagel Dip
Now that everyone is liquored up, it’s probably time to serve a few munchies to keep your guests energized for the epic binge-session that awaits you. You’ll want to start early enough to squeeze in as many episodes as you can, so the food we’re serving up is all about breakfast (it is the most important meal of the day after all).
Any true OC fan knows that breakfast at the Choen’s house always has two things — Bagels and schmear. Since nobody can schmear a bagel better than Sandy Cohen, we’re going to keep things nice and simple with this Everything Bagel Dip. Served with bagel chips, the combination of cream cheese, roasted garlic, onion, poppy seeds and sesame seeds creates the delicious taste of a toasted everything bagel without all of the heavy carbs. We newpsies do have to watch our figures after all, and there probably won’t be enough time to fit in an extra yogalates class between episodes.
Next up on the menu are the aptly named “OC” Pancakes. The base for these fluffy pancakes contains hint of citrus and creamy coconut milk, which transforms the everyday breakfast into a delicious tropical delight. Rather than drizzling maple syrup over this short stack, I’d recommend topping them off with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, shredded coconut and sweet agave nectar.
Can’t you just picture a dish like this on the menu of that cute little diner on the pier that Seth, Summer, Marissa and Ryan always hung out at? I know I can, so that’s what inspired me to create this tasty recipe. Not to mention that fact that I had just finished season 4 and couldn’t get over how cute Summer’s pet rabbit, Pancakes, was.
It wouldn’t be a true OC party if we didn’t celebrate Chrismukkah, so for the final dish we’re making homemade potato pancakes. Latkes are a staple dish in any Jewish home for Hannukah, and we’re making them from scratch just like Nana Cohen would (obviously not Kirsten, she would just order take out). Fair warning, these turned out to be a lot harder than I thought they’d be.
Start by hand grating the potatoes into a bowl of cold water and soak the shreds for 1-2 minutes. Here’s where I went wrong, so listen up because this part is important…After the potatoes soak you’ll roll them up in a dry kitchen towel and wring out as much liquid as you can. My mixture was too wet so I had some trouble getting them to stick together, so next time around I’ll probably substitute pre-shredded potatoes. If you’ve got enough chutzpah to complete this recipe from start to finish I can promise you that the end result will be worth the extra work in the kitchen.
So there you have it, everything you’ll need to throw the perfect OC watch party. Now pour yourself a marg, queue up the pilot episode and prepare to drink anytime something from the list below happens. California here we come…
